Welcome to our Town

Taroom (situated 485km west of Queensland's capital city, Brisbane) is a vital, friendly town, on the banks of the Dawson River. The Taroom district was settled in 1845 after the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed this way in 1844.

The Leichhardt Highway passes through the town, and this affords the traveller a great place to stay on the way north or south, with ample comfortable accommodation, and a variety of recreational facilities that the tourist can enjoy.

The Leichhardt Tree, in the main street of Taroom, is a great tourist attraction, and a wonderful living monument to a great explorer.

When first settled sheep grazing was the main industry, but today beef cattle have taken over, and Taroom district is recognised as one of the best cattle areas of the State. Other industries include grain crops and timber.
